History
A thousand-year-old tradition
Freshwater pearl farming dates back to medieval China, where Buddhist monks already made small Buddha pearls by inserting molds into shells. But it was in the 20th century that modern technique, using the mollusc Hyriopsis cumingii, revolutionized production.
Today, China is the world's leading producer of freshwater pearls — pearls that have gained in quality and refinement over the decades.
Character
An incredible diversity
Freshwater pearls are distinguished by their particularly thick nacre: unlike saltwater pearls, they are almost entirely composed of nacre, which gives them great resistance and a luminous softness.
Their natural shapes and shades—from pure white to soft pink, from lavender to peach—open up an immense creative field, from classic pieces to contemporary compositions.
Porchet Selection
Porchet’s exacting standards
Our freshwater pearls come from the most rigorous farms in Zhejiang province, where the quality of cultivation and pearl sorting are the most demanding.
We select the most beautiful round, semi-round and baroque pearls to create our necklaces, long necklaces and contemporary designs — with the same attention as we give to sea pearls.
